Phantasmagoria

Programme Notes
According to the online Cambridge Dictionary, the word ‘phantasmagoria’ is defined as ‘a confused group of real or imagined images that change quickly, one following the other as in a dream.’
Written for a percussion ensemble consisting of the family of four standard keyboard percussion instruments: the glockenspiel, xylophone, vibraphone, and marimba, this piece adopts an interpretive and improvisatory style and structure, as well as extensively applies non-functional harmony and motivic development, to produce an otherworldly atmosphere, exploring the feeling of carefree aimlessness typical in one’s dream, a feeling that should be familiar, but also somewhat difficult to grasp, to each of us.
