Bio

Coming from humble beginnings in Sabah, Malaysia, Tan Tze Heng has received music education since the age of six, learning the Electone for over ten years. His exposure to wind band music began when he joined his secondary school band as a percussion section member under the tutelage and guidance of Mr. Seck Wai Khen. Since then, his interest and passion in wind band only grew, motivating him to explore deeper into the vast repertoire of wind band music.

He studied classical music theory under the tutelage of Ms. Elaine Chang, obtaining Grade 8 in ABRSM Music Theory examination. He has also self-taught further music theory of modern genres, such as pop, rock and jazz, through online materials, in particular those produced by Mr. Wiwi Kuan through his NiceChord website, as well as more percussion techniques, which have helped in honing his musicianship, both as a composer and a percussion player.

His involvement in music continued during his university studies in Singapore. As a member of a university instrumental ensemble known as NUS RHebels, he has arranged anime, game and movie music for various performances, including the Combined Hall Ensemble Concert (CHEC). He has also composed and performed songs for the Raffles Hall Musical Production (RHMP), a flagship series of student musicals of Raffles Hall. He has performed as a percussionist in various groups, such as NUS Wind Symphony, the alumni band for the Wind Band Association of Singapore (WBAS) Youth Band Festival known as Zeitwinds, National Taipei University (NTPU) Wind Band and OBOG Wind Symphony. He has also joined as a volunteer in the WBAS Youth Band Festival and Singapore International Band Festival (SIBF).

Currently, he is planning to compose more wind band and ensemble works, hoping to contribute to the music scene in Malaysia and beyond.
